Before the mega auction of Indian Premier League (IPL), franchise teams will be able to retain 6 players. These can include 5 international and one uncapped player. Chennai Super Kings' MS Dhoni will be able to play IPL as an uncapped player.
According to media reports, these decisions were taken in the annual meeting of the IPL Governing Council on Saturday. Now the purse limit of the teams has also been increased from Rs 100 crore to Rs 120 crore. Teams will also get Right to Match card in the mega auction. A team can retain a maximum of 6 players of the squad. This will benefit stable teams like KKR, SRH, CSK, RR and MI.
Board Secretary Jay Shah had also announced today that match fees will be given to all the players in the tournament. Also, the Impact Player Rule will also remain in the league. The mega auction can be held in November this year, the dates of which are yet to be decided.
If IPL teams retain 5 international players before the mega auction, then only 45 crores will be left in their purse. With which they will have to buy the remaining 20 players. Among the retained players, 2 players will be part of the team for Rs 18 crore each, 2 players for Rs 14 crore each and 1 player for Rs 11 crore.
An uncapped player can be retained for Rs 4 crore. That means if teams retain 5 international players, then they will have to spend Rs 75 crore, this will save them Rs 45 crore. The uncapped player can also be from any country.
In the IPL mega auction, every time the limit for retaining foreign and Indian players was fixed, however this time there is no limit for retaining foreign and Indian players. If the franchise wants, it can retain all five Indian or all five foreign players.
Foreign players will have to register in the mega auction. If the player does not register, he will not be included in the IPL next year. If an Indian player has played the last international match 5 years ago, then he will be counted as an uncapped player in the auction.
Former captain of 5-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) MS Dhoni will be able to play IPL as an uncapped player. IPL has decided to include its previous rule again. In which players who retired from the Indian team 5 years ago will be able to participate in the auction as uncapped players.
Dhoni retired in 2020, but he played his last match for India in 2019. In this way, by the 2025 IPL, both his retirement and last match will be more than 5 years old. This rule has never been used before, due to which it was removed in 2021. However, now CSK can use this rule for Dhoni.
Right to Match Card is also returning in IPL Mega Auction. If teams are unable to retain a player, they will be able to keep them with them by using the Right to Match Card in the Mega Auction. Teams can retain all 6 players if they want or retain some players and keep some in the squad with the Right to Match Card. If teams want, they can also buy all 6 players through the Right to Match Card without retaining a single player.
Teams can use the Right to Match i.e. RTM card in the auction. For example, suppose Rohit Sharma was not retained by Mumbai Indians. His name came up in the auction and he was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 10 crore. Now if Mumbai wants, they can keep Rohit with them for Rs 10 crore by using the RTM card. The RTM card will remain with all the teams.
The Impact Player Rule, which was introduced in 2023, will also not be removed from IPL. With the help of this rule, teams can replace any one player of the playing-11 with a player sitting on the bench in the middle of the match. Last season, the use of this rule increased the pace of scoring runs. Due to which 9 of the top-10 highest scores in the tournament history were made last season itself.
